I've just been reading the wikipedia entry on The Shining. I will now be able to discuss its hidden meanings be they metaphors for western imperialism, or the US treatment of native Americans. Until now I just thought it was a tale of how writing a book while living in a family with a small child drives you mad; something I can relate to have written a book while living in a family with a small child.
Where I can't discuss The Shining is at home, because I get into trouble; it and Alien are now viewed by the sprog as the example films that he wants to see but can't yet, on account of my going on about them. Frankly I think he'd find the Underworld series more appealing in his early teens, but I haven't raised that topic yet. Nor do I plan to discuss with him the appearances in the Simpsons, as that would get me into more trouble.
What I would like to do is find a way to rationally embed some Shining literary references into code. I can't for the life of me think of any way to snip in something like
Log.warn("All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy");
Not without someone noticing in the logs. Maybe I can use it in test cases, some odd Kubrick-esque cross references. Or examples in a book. But then I'd have to write a book again, but I don't think I could do that and stay sane...
