Rodent of Unusual Size (Ken Coar): "Lucy, you got a lot of 'splainin' to do!"

Welcome to October!

The last couple of weeks have been kinda rough. On the positive side, I've applied for a few jobs and had an interview (a cool job at Duke University). On the downside, I've had more work done in my mouth and it has hurt like hell (I think I'm going to go back to my old dentist); we got the bills for the SBH's trips to the emergency department; our COBRA insurance finally ran out, and the only insurance we could reasonably get still increases our monthly expenses by 50%; I was only able to get 30 days of my 90-day supply of one of my meds because I lost the prescription slip and couldn't do it by mail-order; the change in our expenses means we have to stop feeding the birds; and my office is back to being a disaster area.

I'm also reading Atlas Shrugged for the nth time, and as usual it's both infuriating and inspiring me. And it made me think of some people to whom I owe thanks for pointing me at various books I like. Like Bill Stoddard, one of my managers at IBM, who turned me on to Atlas Shrugged; Gary Cornell, who convinced me to read Mutineer's Moon (which I originally kinda panned but now really like, along with a lot of the rest of Weber's stuff); someone from school who got me to read Alexei Panshin's 'Anthony Villiers' books; John and Debra Carl, who introduced me to Second Sight; John Imbimbo, who introduced me to Traveller; a counselor at a summer camp who introduced me to D&D; and ...

Well, the list goes on and on. But to those listed, and the others I haven't mentioned: thanks!
